So....you've reached "the end." Now what?

Good evening all!

Last night I managed to do something a lot of writers don't:  I got to the end of my story.  I finished, finally, the first actual start to finish draft of "Fresh Ice."  In spite of my best efforts to write this one quickly  (you know, in under a year)  it took me almost two years to get to this point simply because the story I finished is NOT the story I started.

The story I started was about a suburban woman who goes to a Renaissance Faire, shares surprise kiss with a performer, and falls in love with him after her horrible husband dies in a very strange auto shop accident.  I was going to call it "7/8s Time."

Well, the name stayed the same, but everything else managed to change.

What I wound up with was a former Olympic figure skater who's been in exile with her husband for nearly twenty years.  She moves back to Nashville, her hometown, after her husband dies...yes, in a very strange auto shop accident.  There she meets a former NHL bad boy.  They are both in need of a rescue.  I'm now calling it, "Fresh Ice."

But now what?  I've written, and rewritten, and, thanks to the tireless efforts of my critique partner, Linda, REWRITTEN (she has informed me that she can, indeed, recite the first chapter verbatim.) until now I have a rough draft in my hand.  Now what?

Well, now the real work begins.  Now I need to go through and, with the help of my critique partner, fix the grammar, trim the word count, dump the really bad chapters.  I need to tighten, tighten, tighten because, friends, I'm not writing Moby Dick.  My story is going to stay on point.  No one will probably teach my book in an English class...but at least people will enjoy reading it.

Now, since I will probably again e-publish, I have to also format the book.  Design and pay for cover art.  And Market, market, MARKET myself and this book until my whole body hurts.

Maybe I'll pitch this to a traditional publisher.  Maybe...I don't know.

What I do know, and I what I want to pass on to everyone out there who is struggling to just finish the beast, is this:  Getting out the words, "The End" is a huge accomplishment.  Yes, there's work after that.  No, the world is not going to do a giant happy dance and line up to buy your first draft.  Or your second.  Or your third.  BUT, pat yourself on the back, if you've finished that first draft because that, my friends is a very big first step.

Now, I'm off to finish the first draft of my work place humor book.

Go forth and write!

And just like that...inspiration hits!

Good morning!

Sorry I've been absent of late.  At some point a couple weeks ago, I got my muse back and I've been joyfully spewing words onto pages endlessly.

Usually I can't point to any one thing that gets me going after a long writing hiatus.  This time around, however, I can.  Two things happened that got my creative juices flowing.  1)  I found this picture

Most of you will recognize this as the very talented actor, David James Elliott.  But to me...he's Quinn, the hero of my book "7/8ths Time."    I've found other pictures in the past that depict the mental image I have of Quinn, but this one is special.   There's something about DJE's eyes (and I've love been a fan of his "eye acting.") that says to me, "WRITE THE DARN BOOK ALREADY!

The other thing that happened was a bit less intangible.  I met with a personal trainer.  One of the things I'm doing this year, come heck or high water  (I know, but my kids read this blog sometimes...) is I'm going to lose a significant amount of weight.  By significant I mean the equivalent of a sturdy third grader.  So I met with a personal trainer.  I've met with this guy before.  (If you'd like to read about that, check out It Can Only Happen to Sarah!)

Sitting there admitting to him that I was a compulsive liar when it came to my weight and that I needed help with my Cheetos addiction, I said something that hit me like lightning.

"I wish I would just start writing again.  I don't eat when I write."

WELL DUH!

So, my friends, I'm thrilled to announce that in the past week I've written 10,000 words and lost somewhere between 2 and 3 pounds.  A drop in the bucket on both fronts, but definitely a great start!

So if I'm missing from the blogging business for a while, please forgive me.  I'm really hoping to have a completed  AND PUBLISHED novel by year's end...and when I announce it I'm hoping to wear the Rick Springfield T-shirt I bought at the last concert that I knew I hadn't a prayer of wearing until I lost some weight.  It's hanging in my closet right now, mocking me, but I will prevail!

Meanwhile, the rest of you...go forth and WRITE!

Taking a chance in the Wild Wild West

Good morning!

Getting published is two parts hard work, two parts talent, and one part timing and one part luck. I listened to NY Times bestseller Sherilyn Kenyon speak once, and she showed us her rejection file for one year...it was about six inches thick. And that was AFTER she'd published several books. (I'm working on a folder like that myself.)
Here are the facts: The economy stinks. People aren't going to spend money on stuff they don't need. And if they can get it cheaper someplace else, they're not going to spend top dollar. Be honest with yourself. Do you run to the bookstores to buy a new book, or do you check it out at the library, or a second hand store? Sales for all genres of books are down by double digits...except romance. (I'll get to that in a minute.)

It's expensive to publish a book, especially for big publishing houses that cling to the tradition of printing 10000 copies of a book right out of the box. (One of the things I love about Wild Rose, they print on demand. No wasted paper.)

Add to these facts this little nugget: The Amazon Kindle is now $139.00. As the price comes down on these electronic readers, the interest in digital downloads goes up because 1) They're cheaper than a print book and 2) You can store 100's of books in a reader smaller than a spiral notebook. No more groaning shelves of books.

Put that all together and, my friends, here's what I've come up with: For a new author, the best way to get published is to do it yourself. The days of paying to be published at vanity presses are going away. There's no longer the stigma attached that there once was about self publishing.

Simply put: Readers don't care who put the book out. Readers want to read. Case in point: I've had non writers read "Lies in Chance" and love it. So why can't I get it published? Because publishers don't know what to do with a story that doesn't fit into a cubby hole. Yet it's a good story, one worth reading. Thusly, as I await one more final rejection, I'm readying "Lies in Chance" for self publishing.
Will I miss having a book with my name on it? Sure. Every author wants that. But I'm really more interested in people reading my story. As an artist I'm more interested in writing the stories that I have in my head. And, as a person who does not enjoy her daily job, I'm more interested in getting paid!

Romance is the one genre that's growing in this economy.  Economists try to explain it, but the reality is this:  Romance is fun to read, the books are generally cheaper to buy than other books, women buy more books than men, and everyone is looking for a happy ending.  So if you write romance, keep plugging away, you'll find a publisher for what you're working on.

But for me, I've never completely identified myself as a romance author.  "Dream in Color" is a romance, yes, and I love my friends over at Wild Rose Press.  In fact, if you're looking for someone to treat your first baby with love, Wild Rose is the place to go.  However, I've got other stories in my head, stories that won't fit in the Romance genre.
So, my friends, I'm getting "Lies in Chance" ready. And after that, "7/8ths time" will hit e publishing. I'm a storyteller. I want to tell my stories. I'm a humorist, I want people to laugh at what I write, which is why I'm in the process of turning some of the posts from my blog http://itcanonlyhappentosarah.blogspot.com into a book loosely titled "Stalking Rick Springfield and Other Hobbies of the Middle Aged Suburban Woman."

Beyond that, the sky's the limit in the Wild Wild West of self publishing!

Now all I need is an artist to do my cover art! Anyone? Anyone?

One final note:  Happy Birthday to David James Elliott...who is the inspiration for Quinn Murray, the hero in my newest book.  Cheers to you, David!

Completely geeking out...on a professional level, of course!

Good afternoon!

Sometimes the old email in box contains more than just home refinance offers and Nigerian lottery winnings. Sometimes there's an email in there that's so astounding you spit your coffee out onto your desk and you are nauseous for the entire day.
My cousin, whom I will call Jane, has been friends for some time with the wife of one of my very favorite sports figures. Jane and I have joked about my complete geekdom where this gent is concerned.

Very recently, I mentioned in passing to Jane, that Quinn, the hero in my newest attempt at fiction was going to be a retired professional athlete. Well, this morning, Jane emailed me said sports figure's cell phone number and told me to call him and ask him any questions I wanted to.

Is there any chance at all that I'm not suddenly a complete geek over this?
"Maybe if I stare hard enough at the phone and think about the questions, I won't actually have to dial. That could work!"

None. No chance. Nada.

Instead, I've spent the morning staring at said phone number, wondering just how likely it is I'm going to actually make that phone call. I mean, in the interest of the book, I have to, right? Meanwhile, there is the possibility that I can call him and ask my questions and be completely professional about this. Right?

Oh wait, let's go back a few months to the moment when my new friends Vicki and Wendy, did the grand favor of introducing me to Rick Springfield. He said, "I look forward to reading you book." I said,"Gerp gleeble gleck."

Well, this isn't Rick Springfield...but it's somewhat close. And it's not in person at a bowling alley...it's on the phone and I'm AWESOME on the phone. And...

And as a writer who wants to get published, I have to write the best book I can so I have to suck up the stupid geekiness and ask the questions and be completely professional. Because that's what a real writer would. That's what big time authors do. That's what Stephen King would do.

Wait, is there anyone on the planet that could send Stephen King into fanatical spasms?

Well, there. I'm going to focus on that and I'm going to write down the questions I have, and then I'm going to practice asking them and THEN I'm going to take some preemptive Pepto Bismol and MAKE THAT CALL!

So, have a great weekend all! And get back to writing!

Lies, Damned Lies, and Lies in Chance...

Howdy my friends!

Okay, I realize it's been a bit since I posted last, but I have a really, really good reason: I'VE BEEN WRITING!

(I'll wait now while you clean off your computer screens after spewing coffee at it in what I can only imagine was a beautiful spit take.)

Yep, it's true. I got off my fanny, or got on it, your pick, and got my entry ready for the 2010 Amazon.com Breakthrough Novel Awards. Yes, I entered my novel lovingly known as "The Stupid Novel." However, I managed to come up with a title all on my own that does not completely suck.

Ready?

LIES IN CHANCE

I know, who knew I could string together three words that sounded like an actual book title. Certainly not me! LOL!

Okay, but Sarah, that doesn't sound like a romance novel....

(Gasp!)

I know. Here's the thing: I've never thought of TSN (The Stupid Novel) as a romance. There is a romance at the core of it, yes. And true, broken hearts abound and people get all sweaty with each other. BUT, and it's a big old BUT, there were just too many voices in my head as I wrote it for it to be a romance. Too many side characters shouting, "HEY! WHAT ABOUT ME?"

(Excuse me while I take a moment and hum my favorite Moving Pictures Song...."

I'm back. So anyway, I spent the better part of these last couple weeks amping up the volume on those noisy characters in my head and bing bam boom, I have what one would consider a Commercial Fiction novel.

You know, something my friend Elliott might even find interesting, should he bump into it at Target. Of course, Elliott is one of the few who's had the pleasure (?) of slogging through many early versions of TSN (remember when I tried to kill Molly? And the group had a collective fit?) so I'll give him a pass in Target. :)

The benefit for this is that hopefully, hopefully the judges won't be CONFUSED (a word used in a rejection letter recently) by who the main characters are. In a romance that's very important. In a commercial fiction, still important, but it's okay if other characters get a bit of the nooky...I mean limelight.

So what I hope to accomplish with TSN 4.0 is to get at least as far as 3.0 made it, the quarterfinals, and I'm hoping to actually get into the semis. I figure that will look good on a query letter! (Ask for it by name LIES IN CHANCE!)

Meanwhile, I got a huge boost from my Mad City Romance Writers meeting this past Saturday as I was struggling through some sticky plot points in "7/8ths Time." Apparently, even though I really hoped to write a normal romance type book with this one, you know, the heroine wins the man and is the central figure, my main character is my HERO, and this is his journey.

No worries. I love writing men, especially this guy, Quinn. I'm more than a little in love with him. I find it helps to fall in love with your hero when you're writing him. So now I get to make this be all about him, that means he gets more chapters, and that means I get more nooky...I mean writing time with Quinn.

I am, however, finding myself growing jealous of my heroine...

Yep, I need help!

On one last note, a sadder one, Rick Springfield's beloved pup, Gomer, past away earlier this week. For those of you who are fans, you know how important Gomer was to Rick. For more information and a slide show on the sweet boy, go on over to Rick's website www.rickspringfield.com

Happy writing all!

One week down...and already this year is flying by!

Hello all!

I'm closing up shop for the week and I can't help but notice just how fast 2010 seems to be moving. It's can't possibly be the 8th already, can it?

The phrase, "Time flies when you're having fun," isn't quite complete. Yes, time seems to move faster when you're doing something you enjoy, like spending a day at Great America, or watching a really good movie. And time does seem to drag when you're doing something you don't enjoy, like shopping with the mother-in-law or listening to a really, really long sermon at church.

But time also flies when you're way, way, WAY busy and you have a deadline you must meet.

So I have this self imposed deadline to finish "7/8ths Time" by the end of the month. If I could stay at home and write all day, this would be a stretch, but as it is, I work a full time job, so writing gets pushed aside. And, now that it's the 8th of the month, time is flying faster and faster.

Will I finish? I don't know. But I'm going to give it my best try. And the best part about that is, if I don't finish, I'll be darn close. Maybe I don't enter the contest I want to on the 7th of February, but this push will get me closer to my goal of getting a second book published.

Have a great weekend all and do something that makes your time fly!

Writing: it's a family affair!

Hey all!

Sorry I've been MIA this week...picked up a nasty computer virus through Facebook. Here's a tip: Anything that says it's a personal anti virus is a lie and will mess up your computer. Don't do it! Also, it's a good idea to ignore those gifts, drinks, pillow fights, whatnot on Facebook. Just don't do it!

So my biggest news on the writing front is about my work in progres, "7/8th time." As you may know, my main character, Quinn Murray, is a DJ in Nashville, inspired by a photo of David James Elliott. (BTW, thank you everyone who suggested, "The Storm." I've managed to tape it off of Spike TV and I'll be watching it this weekend.)

Anyway, what I really wanted was to talk to a DJ and get a feel for a day in the life. Well, my hubby is the body shop manager at the local Chevy dealership. (If you live in the Milwaukee area, go to Boucher Chevy for your body shop needs. Tom is the most honest person you're ever going to deal with and he's a sweet heart, too.) A local morning DJ from 97.3 The Brew( my SECOND favorite radio station behind my beloved bob and Brian at 1029 the hog.) had his car fixed and hubby managed to get me an interview with Fish, the DJ. Bonus, Fish has mentioned that he'd like to get me on air and do some free promo for "Dream in Color."

This is not something I could do on my own. I would never have this kind of access to a DJ on my own. Even my air time with Bob and Brian have been purely luck. (Although, it should be noted that they are darling guys and have also offered to promo the book.) But thanks to the hubby I have a whole new outlet for promotion.

Ponder this, my writing friends: writing may be a solitary business, but being a writer is not. We all have research to do, not just those brave historical writers! "dream in Color" is as close to my life as I'll ever write, but I had to do plenty of research to get it right. So don't be afraid to get out there and talk to people, especially if you're trying to create a character and you want to get it right!

Have a safe and wonderful LAbor Day weekend!
