Does is make me a bad person if this song makes me was to tear my ears off?

Good afternoon all!

We are finally in the homstretch. Bob and Brian on 1029 the HOG have begun the time honored tradition of reading listeners' "Holiday Horror Stories." Awesome to know that we are all in same boat when it comes to hating the family get togethers over the holidays. New Girl spent a significant amount of my morning relating several such stories.

In deference to New Girl, who is young and does not have the well developed taste for eclectic music mixes dating pre 1999, I've turned the radio to the "All Christmas All the Time" radio station. If you're in the Milwaukee area, I don't need to tell you which one that is. The mix might mean variety, but not on this radio station, and especially at Christmas time.

Honestly, if you're going to play Christmas music 24-7 from the first week of November to the end of December, wouldn't you think a little variety is in order? Seriously, must we be subjected to the same 50 songs over and over and over? I love Christmas music, but I honestly believe I have a bigger collection of holiday CD's than this radio station. I could at least get through a business week without a repeat.

But there is one song that really, really sticks in my head and makes me want to choke myself. I know, when I tell you the title of this song, you're going to think I'm a horrible person. Just remember, I've heard this song 17 times this week.

The Christmas Shoes.

You know the song...a guy is shopping and there's a kid who wants to get a pair of shoes for his mother who is dying and he doesn't have enough money.

Every time I hear it I want to tear my ears off. The first 100 times I heard this drippy, maudlin tale I got misty eyed. But that emotion wears off when you hear it over and over and over...like a broken record...

Does that make me a bad person?

I'd love to hear from you out there. What Christmas songs make you want to injure yourself so you don't have to listen to them?

  1. Little Drummer Boy... most definitely. I think a lot of people request Christmas Shoes so I'm sorry it's driven you crazy.

  2. I have heard so many people talk about 'The Christmas Shoes' this year, I can't say I've ever heard it, nor do I know what it is.

After working retail for two holiday seasons, Feliz Navidad grates on me.

  3. Oh yeah...both great candidates for most overplayed songs! I'll add, "Santa Baby," to that list.
